Shrewsbury

Half-timbered buildings lean over narrow medieval streets like old friends sharing secrets. Shrewsbury sits within an almost perfect loop of the River Severn, creating what feels like England's most picturesque island town. The river acts as a natural moat, making the historic centre feel wonderfully contained and walkable.

Climbing up to Castle Mound gives you the best view over those famous black-and-white Tudor buildings. It's a proper climb but worth every step. The mound is all that remains of the Norman castle, but the panoramic views across Shropshire's rolling countryside are the real prize here.

Just outside town, Lyth Hill Countryside Site offers some cracking walking territory. The hill provides another excellent vantage point, this time looking back towards the town's river loop. On clear days you can see right across to the Welsh hills.

Darwin was born here, and you'll find his statue watching over the town centre. The medieval street pattern remains largely intact, creating a maze of independent shops and traditional pubs that feels refreshingly authentic. Midweek, the town has a lovely unhurried pace that weekend visitors never quite experience.

Bayston Hill Community Woodland and Spring Coppice provide decent walks when you fancy escaping the cobbles for proper countryside. Both offer that mix of ancient woodland and managed paths that makes Shropshire such a joy for walking.

Reaching Shrewsbury is straightforward - regular trains from Birmingham take just over an hour, while the M54 brings drivers right to the edge of town. Staying at one of the nearby parks puts you within easy reach of this genuinely special county town, plus all that Shropshire countryside beyond.
