Sheerness

The salt air hits you the moment you step off the train at Sheerness-on-Sea. This working port town on the Isle of Sheppey doesn't put on airs - it's proper Kent coast, with cargo ships rumbling past and the Thames Estuary stretching grey-blue towards the horizon. The town centre feels lived-in rather than polished for tourists, which gives it an honest character that's refreshing after the chocolate-box prettiness of some coastal spots.

Shellbeach offers a decent stretch of sand when the tide's right, though don't expect Bournemouth. It's the sort of place where locals walk their dogs and families spread out picnic blankets without fighting for space. The Short Brother Statue pays tribute to the aviation pioneers who made their mark here - aviation history buffs will appreciate the nod to Sheppey's role in early flight.

Venturing beyond town, the landscape opens up into something quite special. Leysdown Coastal Country Park protects a wild stretch of coastline where skylarks nest and sea walls give way to mudflats. The Swale National Nature Reserve is brilliant for birdwatching - curlews and redshanks pick their way through the marshes while container ships glide past like floating cities.

Getting here takes about an hour and a half from London Victoria, changing at Sittingbourne. The surrounding countryside is flat farmland punctuated by drainage ditches - not scenic in a chocolate-box way, but there's something calming about the big skies and endless fields.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense for exploring this overlooked corner of Kent. You're close enough to Canterbury for day trips (40 minutes by car) but far enough from the crowds to appreciate the marshes and mudflats in peace.
