Shell Beach

The beach at Sheerness isn't what most people expect when they hear the name. What makes Shell Beach actually worth your time is the sheer volume of shells - cockle shells mostly, white and cream, carpeting the shore in a way that feels almost otherworldly. Walk along and you'll find the beach floor is basically one giant shell bank, crunching underfoot as you move. It's genuinely odd, in the best way.

Historically, this stretch became famous because Victorian collectors would descend on it looking for rarities, though these days you're mostly finding the everyday stuff. Kids tend to find it fascinating for about twenty minutes - there's something satisfying about the texture and the novelty of it - but it won't hold their attention for hours. Walkers might stop by en route along the coast, and photographers sometimes catch decent light here, particularly in late afternoon.

It's free to access, obviously. The nearest town is Sheerness itself, which has all the standard seaside resort facilities. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Muswell Manor is genuinely close at under a mile - it's an easy walk down to have a look. Don't expect pristine golden sand or dramatic cliffs. This is a working Kent coast, a bit industrial in places, but Shell Beach itself has a strange charm. Worth the detour if you're in the area for a few days, though I wouldn't travel far specifically for it.
