Capel Hill

The highest point on the Isle of Sheppey doesn't exactly announce itself. At just 50 metres above sea level, Capel Hill is more of a gentle rise than a dramatic summit, but that's rather the point - from up here you get proper views across the flat marshland that makes this corner of Kent what it is.

It's a straightforward walk from Sheerness, the nearest town, and takes about twenty minutes on foot if you're not dawdling. The landscape around it is characteristically low-lying and windswept - you won't find dramatic cliffs or woodland here. What you will find is space, wide skies, and on a clear day, sightlines that stretch across the island's interior. Kids might find it a bit underwhelming after the novelty wears off, but walkers and anyone interested in how the land shapes a place will appreciate the perspective.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Harts, Central Beach, Shurland Dale, or any of the others clustered within two miles - it makes a decent morning walk before breakfast or an evening stroll to watch the light change across the marshes. No admission fee, no facilities to speak of, just you and the view. The real appeal is that it breaks up a seaside holiday without requiring any planning or expense. Come here after visiting Sheerness itself, or use it as a proper leg-stretch between the beach and your caravan. Don't expect Instagram moments, but do expect a moment of genuine quiet.
