Sandown

Golden sand stretches for miles along this classic Isle of Wight resort, where Victorian pier meets proper British seaside charm. Sandown's been drawing families since the railway arrived in 1864, and it still delivers that old-school holiday feeling without the pretension of some south coast spots.

The town centre runs parallel to the beach - functional rather than fancy, but it works. Esplanade Gardens provide a proper green space for afternoon strolls, while the pier offers the usual seaside amusements. What sets Sandown apart is its position on the island's sheltered east coast, meaning calmer waters than you'll find at the windier western beaches.

Beyond the immediate seafront, the countryside opens up beautifully. Alverstone Mead lies just inland, a lovely walking spot that most visitors miss entirely. The Bird Sanctuary provides excellent wildlife watching, particularly during migration seasons. For history buffs, the Sea Mark tells stories of the island's maritime past.

The surrounding downs roll away from the coast in gentle folds - proper walking country if you fancy stretching your legs. Shanklin's just down the coast road, easily reached for a change of scene, while Newport sits at the island's heart, about twenty minutes by car.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to walk into town for fish and chips or an evening pint, but far enough out to enjoy the island's quieter side. The coastal location means sea breezes keep things fresh even on the hottest summer days, and you're well placed to explore both the dramatic western cliffs and the gentler eastern shores without lengthy drives.
