Bird Sanctuary

Two minutes' walk from Sandown's seafront, this compact nature reserve feels like stepping into a different world. Reed beds and scrubland provide cover for dozens of bird species, with wooden viewing hides dotted along the well-maintained paths. I spent a proper morning here watching kingfishers dart between the reeds and spotted at least three different warbler species.

Families will find it manageable - the main circuit takes about forty minutes at a gentle pace, and the raised boardwalks keep little ones engaged. Serious birders should bring binoculars and allow two hours, especially during migration periods in spring and autumn when the variety really picks up.

The reserve works brilliantly as part of a holiday park stay in the area. Cheverton Copse and Old Barn Touring Park are both within easy walking distance, making this an ideal early morning excursion before the beach crowds arrive. Kids who've had enough of sand and arcades often perk up when they spot their first heron or catch sight of the resident barn owls at dusk.

Being so close to Sandown town centre, you can easily combine a visit with lunch or shopping. The paths are mostly flat and suitable for pushchairs, though some boardwalk sections might prove tricky. Worth checking locally about opening times and any entry fees before making the trip.
