Borthwood Copse

Ancient woodland spreads across twelve acres just outside Sandown, creating one of the island's more peaceful nature reserves. Borthwood Copse feels wonderfully untouched - oak and ash trees tower overhead while brambles and wild garlic carpet the forest floor depending on the season.

Walking here isn't about dramatic views or Instagram moments. It's proper woodland wandering where you might spot red squirrels if you're lucky, and definitely hear more birdsong than traffic. The paths weave between mature trees, some clearly centuries old, creating that cathedral-like atmosphere you get in ancient forests.

Families with young children will find it manageable - no steep climbs or tricky terrain to navigate. Dog walkers absolutely love it, though keep leads handy during nesting season. The copse works brilliantly as a gentle morning stroll before heading to Sandown's beaches, or an afternoon escape when the coast gets too crowded.

Being so close to Cheverton Copse Holiday Park and several other sites around Sandown makes this a handy retreat for anyone staying nearby. You won't need more than an hour unless you're really taking your time, but it's the sort of place where sitting quietly on a fallen log feels entirely right. Not spectacular, but genuinely restorative.
