Tropical birds screech overhead, monkeys swing past your head, and the air smells distinctly like you've left the Isle of Wight behind. Amazon World in Sandown is exactly what it claims to be - a zoo focused entirely on South American wildlife, and it works well enough for a couple of hours if you're staying nearby.

You'll walk through various enclosures housing jaguars, anacondas, poison dart frogs, and the expected roster of parrots and macaws. The staff clearly know their stuff, and the animals seem reasonably well cared for. It's indoor and outdoor sections mixed together, which matters on the Isle of Wight where the weather can turn without warning.

Families with younger children will get the most from it - there's enough novelty in seeing actual anacondas and sloths to hold their attention for the duration. Teenagers might find it a bit small and move through faster. Adults tend to appreciate the educational talks more than the walk-around itself.

It's not free, but admission is reasonable for what you get. Allow two to three hours maximum. The real value is proximity - if you're camped at Appuldurcombe Gardens or any of the parks clustered around Sandown, it's an excellent rainy-day option or a decent half-day activity. On a sunny day, you might prefer the beaches instead. It's well-positioned as a backup plan rather than a reason to visit the island, but that's precisely what makes it useful.
