Paignton

The train pulls into Paignton station and you know you're somewhere proper seaside. This isn't one of those genteel Devon resorts - it's got candy floss, amusement arcades, and families dragging beach chairs across the sand. The sort of place where Sunday roast comes with a sea view and nobody minds sand between their toes.

Goodrington Sands stretches out south of the town centre, a cracking beach that actually delivers on the classic British seaside promise. When the tide's out, there's acres of golden sand for the kids to run wild. Splashdown Quaywest sits right on the waterfront - one of those water parks that looks slightly mad from the outside but keeps families happy for hours.

Oldway Mansion dominates the inland approach to town, a proper Victorian pile that feels wonderfully out of place among the holiday lets. The building's got serious presence, though it's the gardens that really impress on a sunny afternoon.

Venture beyond the seafront and Paignton reveals quieter charms. Occombe Woods and the neighbouring Clennon Lakes offer decent walking when you've had enough of the beach crowds. Church Wood provides another escape route, though it's a bit of a trek from the town centre.

Getting here couldn't be easier - the main line runs direct from London Paddington, while the A380 brings drivers straight down from the M5. Torquay's just up the coast if you fancy something slightly more upmarket for dinner.

Staying at one of the holiday parks scattered around the area makes perfect sense. You get the best of both worlds - proper seaside fun when you want it, plus countryside walks and Dartmoor day trips when the beach gets too hectic. Preston and the surrounding villages provide a quieter base while keeping Paignton's attractions within easy reach.
