Scotland's seafood capital sits where Loch Linnhe meets the Atlantic, surrounded by a landscape that changes with the weather. One moment you're watching ferries steam toward Mull through brilliant sunshine, the next you're squinting through Highland mist at the jagged peaks across the water. It's proper Scottish West Coast drama.

Oban feels refreshingly unpretentious for such a tourist magnet. The harbour buzzes with CalMac ferries, fishing boats, and the odd yacht, while the famous distillery keeps things civilised with tastings that rarely disappoint. McCaig's Tower looms above the town like some Victorian folly - which is exactly what it is. The climb up rewards you with cracking views across the Inner Hebrides.

Venture beyond the town and you're quickly into serious hill country. Tom Soilleir and Aird Luing offer proper walks with views that stretch to Mull on clear days. The coastline splinters into countless lochs and islands - this is where mainland Scotland starts dissolving into the Atlantic. Kilchattan Old Parish Church and the various war memorials scattered across the landscape remind you this isn't just scenic; people have lived and died here for centuries.

Getting here means the A85 from Glasgow or Stirling - about two and a half hours of increasingly dramatic scenery. The train from Glasgow Queen Street is slower but infinitely more relaxing, winding through lochs and glens. Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough for evening strolls around the harbour, but far enough out to appreciate the silence when the last ferry departs and Oban settles into its Highland evening routine.
