Oban

Easdale Island Folk Museum sits just offshore, accessible by a tiny passenger ferry that runs regularly in season. The island itself feels like stepping back in time, with former quarry workers' cottages now serving as holiday lets. Back on the mainland, several peaks offer rewarding hikes for those willing to put in the effort - Meall a' Chàise and Bàrr Mòr both provide sweeping views across the Inner Hebrides.

Trains from Glasgow reach Oban in roughly three hours, making it surprisingly accessible for such a remote-feeling destination. The journey itself becomes part of the experience as the West Highland Line cuts through some of Scotland's finest scenery. Staying at one of the holiday parks dotted around the area gives you a proper base for island-hopping while keeping accommodation costs reasonable - particularly useful given Oban's hotel prices during peak season.
