Clachan Bridge (Bridge over the Atlantic)

The single-track bridge connecting Seil Island to the mainland is technically just a stone arch built in 1792, but locals call it the Bridge over the Atlantic because it spans a tidal strait. You can walk across free of charge any time, and most people do it in under five minutes - though plenty stop midway for photos of the water below and the islands beyond.

What you're actually looking at is clever marketing meeting geography. The Atlantic proper is miles west, but the stretch of sea here feels properly wild when the tide's running. The bridge itself is modest, almost understated compared to what the name promises, but that's partly why it works. No queues, no ticket booths, just a functional piece of 18th-century engineering doing what it's done for 230 years.

Walkers and landscape photographers get the most from this one. Families with young kids will manage the crossing fine, though there's not much to do once you're on Seil Island beyond a pub and a general shop. Most people make this a quick stop between Oban and points further south rather than a destination in itself.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Argyll Kayaker Cove and Oban Holiday Park are both within striking distance - it's worth the short drive from Oban just for the novelty and the coastal scenery. Go when the light's good. The weather changes fast out here, so an overcast morning can clear by afternoon.
