Ellenabeich Heritage Centre

The old slate quarry islands off Oban have a proper story to tell, and this heritage centre on Seil Island is where you'll get it. The small museum walks you through the industrial boom that turned these waters into a working quarry landscape - think 19th-century graft, with quarrymen extracting slate from underwater pits and shipping it across Britain. It's not flashy, but that's rather the point. You'll see tools, photographs, and accounts from people who actually worked here, which beats any polished interpretation you'll find elsewhere.

Allow a good hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're the sort who reads every panel. The centre appeals most to history buffs and industrial heritage enthusiasts rather than young kids - there's not much to do hands-on, and it'll feel a bit dry for under-tens after twenty minutes. Adults planning a proper walking holiday in the area, though, will find it invaluable context before heading out to explore the quarry landscape itself.

It's free to visit, which is brilliant, and runs April through October, Sundays to Fridays, 11am to 4pm. That's tight if you're a weekend warrior, so weekday mornings work best. The drive from Oban takes forty minutes or so. If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks - Argyll Kayaker Cove is cracking if you want water access, or Sunnybrae if you prefer something quieter - the centre makes a solid rainy-day option or a half-morning stop before tackling the coastal walks properly.
