Market day transforms everything here. Twice weekly, the cobbled streets around Castle Square fill with stalls selling everything from local cheeses to hand-forged ironwork, and suddenly this medieval market town feels alive in the way it has for nearly a thousand years. The rest of the week, Ludlow settles into a quieter rhythm - one that suits it rather well.

Food lovers make pilgrimages here. The town punches well above its weight for restaurants, with more Michelin recognition per square mile than anywhere else in the Midlands. But it's not all fine dining - the pubs do proper traditional fare, and the weekly farmers' market is where locals actually shop.

Ludlow Castle dominates the skyline from almost every angle. The Norman fortress sits on a rocky outcrop above the River Teme, its curtain walls largely intact after 900 years. From the top, views stretch across the Shropshire Hills towards Wales - cracking countryside that's surprisingly empty once you leave the main roads.

St Peter's Church is worth the climb up through the old town. The 15th-century tower houses some of the finest medieval stained glass in the Welsh Marches. Most visitors rush past on their way to the castle, which is their loss.

Getting here means taking the A49 north from Hereford or south from Shrewsbury. The railway station connects to Birmingham and Cardiff, though services aren't frequent. Staying at one of the holiday parks scattered around the Teme Valley gives you proper access to both the town's food scene and the walking country beyond - Mortimer Forest starts just three miles south, and the Shropshire Way passes right through.
