Phil Bennett rugby statue in town centre Twin reservoirs with valley walking trails Industrial heritage ruins to explore 20 minutes from Swansea by car

About Llanelli

Rugby runs through the veins of this West Wales industrial town like molten steel. The Phil Bennett Statue stands testament to one of rugby's greatest fly-halves, while the town's proud sporting heritage continues at places like Llangennech Sports Pavilion.

Llanelli might have lost much of its tinplate industry, but it's found new purpose as a gateway to some proper Welsh countryside. The twin reservoirs - Upper Lliedi and Cwm Lliedi - offer decent walking with views across the Gwendraeth Valley. Troserch Woods provide a lovely woodland ramble, especially when the bluebells are out in spring.

History buffs will find plenty to poke around. Huntsman's Cottage and Troserch Mill ruins speak to a time when this valley hummed with activity, while the abandoned Goitre Wen Mine offers a glimpse into Wales' industrial past. The town proper has three churches worth noting - Trinity, St Teilo, and Holy Trinity - each telling part of Llanelli's story.

For a proper stretch of the legs, Coed Bach Park and Hendy Park provide green breathing space away from the A484. Both are well-maintained nature reserves where you can actually hear birdsong over traffic.

Getting here couldn't be easier - the M4 runs practically overhead, and Llangennech station connects you to the wider rail network. Swansea's just 20 minutes east if you need bigger shops or nightlife.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You're well-placed for day trips to the Gower Peninsula, the Brecon Beacons feel achievable, and the Carmarthenshire coast is on your doorstep. Plus, you can always nip into town for a proper Welsh pint.
