Cwm Lliedi Reservoir

Water this still and reflective tends to stop you in your tracks. Cwm Lliedi Reservoir sits in a valley just outside Llanelli, a proper working water supply that somehow feels entirely wild - no theme park energy, no visitor centre gift shop. Just water, moorland, and the kind of quiet that makes you realise how little of it there is around.

The reservoir works best for walkers and birdwatchers. There's a circuit around the water that takes a good couple of hours depending on your pace, and the footpaths are decent enough though muddy after rain. Bring binoculars if you're keen on spotting redshank and curlew - the wetland birds here are proper worth watching. It's the sort of place where you might see nothing for twenty minutes, then suddenly everything at once.

Families with young kids might find it a bit thin on actual attractions - there's no café, no playground, no information boards to read. Older children who can walk a few miles and don't need constant entertainment will do fine. The views across the water toward the valley sides are lovely without being dramatic.

Access appears to be free, though there's limited parking at the main access point. Visit in autumn or winter when the light hits the water properly and it's quieter still. Spring brings migrants through if you're into that sort of thing.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like South Wales Touring or Gateway Resort around Llanelli, this is genuinely worth the short drive. Not spectacular, but honest and worth an afternoon.
