About Kingsbridge

The little town sits at the head of a drowned river valley where the Avon meets the sea. That's the thing about Kingsbridge - it feels more like a proper working town than a tourist trap, with real shops serving real locals along the high street. The estuary stretches out towards Salcombe, all mudflats and bobbing boats when the tide's out.

Wander down to the quayside and you'll find the Cookworthy Museum tucked away, telling the story of this corner of South Devon. It's small but properly done. Kings Cinema still shows films most nights - one of those lovely old picture houses that's somehow survived. The Red Propeller Gallery showcases local artists, though it's hit and miss depending on what's on.

Surrounding countryside is a mix of deep valleys and rolling farmland. Tacket Wood and West Alvington Wood offer decent walks if you fancy stretching your legs, while Longpark Wood sits just outside town. The South West Coast Path is a short drive away - Salcombe's about twenty minutes down winding lanes.

Kingsbridge works well as a base because it's got proper amenities. Tesco, pharmacy, decent pubs. You're close enough to the coast for day trips but far enough inland to avoid the summer madness. The town's connected to the old South Devon Railway line, though it's heritage trains only now - Kingsbridge Park Side and Kingsbridge Ria End stations see steam engines puffing through during the season.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You get the peaceful countryside but can nip into town for supplies or a meal out. The estuary walks are lovely at sunset.
