Longbrook Woods

The woodland walk through Longbrook Woods, just outside Kingsbridge, is one of those spots you stumble upon rather than deliberately seek out - which is exactly why it's worth the detour. Ancient oak and beech trees create a proper canopy overhead, and the paths are well-maintained enough that you won't spend the whole time navigating roots and mud. There's a decent stream running through it too, which makes the walk feel less like a plodding circuit and more like an actual adventure.

The real pull here is the sense of stepping into proper old Devon woodland - no crowds, no visitor centre, just trees doing what they've done for centuries. You'll want a good two hours minimum if you're exploring properly, though you can knock off a loop in 45 minutes if you're short on time. It's ideal for families who've got kids old enough to walk without constant moaning, and dog walkers absolutely live for this sort of place. History buffs might appreciate the fact that this is ancient woodland with some serious ecological credentials, though there's nothing obviously heritage-marked to gawk at.

Being free and open access year-round, it fits nicely into a wider South Devon parks holiday. Base yourself at South Devon Camping Lower Terawhiti Farm or Karrageen Caravan & Camping Park - both cracking spots within a few miles - and you can combine this with coastal walks and proper seaside villages without straying far. Go early morning in spring or autumn for the best light through the canopy.
