Inverness

The mist rolls off the Monadhliath Mountains most mornings, shrouding the capital of the Highlands in that proper Scottish mystique you can't fake. Inverness sits at the meeting point of ancient trade routes and modern sensibilities - where the A9 meets the Great Glen and the River Ness flows toward its famous loch.

Loch Ness dominates conversations here, naturally. But locals know the real treasure lies in the surrounding peaks and glens. The Monadhliath range offers proper hill walking - Beinn Bhreac and Càrn Glas-choire provide cracking views without the tourist crowds of the Cairngorms. Tomatin Distillery, just south of the city, does an excellent tour that ends with a dram overlooking Strathdearn.

History buffs will find plenty beyond Culloden. The Monument to Sir Aeneas Mackintosh and various war memorials dot the landscape, telling stories of Highland clans and more recent conflicts. The Whitley N1498 Air Crash Site serves as a sobering reminder of wartime losses in these hills.

Getting here couldn't be easier - the A9 runs straight through from Perth, and the railway connects directly to Edinburgh and Glasgow. Most visitors rush straight to Loch Ness, but the real Highland character emerges in the quieter moments: early morning walks through Soilshan Wood, or watching the light change over Loch Braigh Bruthaich.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. Highland Glen Holiday Park gets consistently good reviews, and you're perfectly positioned for day trips into the Cairngorms or west toward Skye. The mountains feel close enough to touch, but you've got proper facilities and easy access to the city when you fancy a meal out.
