Skiing in winter, mountain biking in summer - Aviemore has built its reputation as Scotland's outdoor adventure capital. This former railway junction has transformed from sleepy Highland village to year-round resort town, though it never quite shakes off that slightly artificial feel.

The Cairngorms National Park sprawls in every direction. Serious walkers head for the peaks - Craigellachie offers the gentlest introduction, while Càrn Eilrig and Meall Buidhe demand proper preparation. Lochan Dubh makes for a lovely woodland walk when the weather turns.

Aviemore itself keeps things practical rather than pretty. The train station connects you to Edinburgh and Glasgow in under three hours, making weekend breaks dead easy. Spey Valley Cinema gives you somewhere to retreat when Highland weather does its worst. For something stronger than popcorn, Kinrara Distillery runs tours and tastings.

Summer brings mountain bikers to the forest trails, while families head to Aviemore Kart Raceway for proper petrol-fueled fun. The Monument to General Rice offers a bit of historical context, though most visitors come for the adrenaline rather than the heritage.

Basing yourself at Highland Glen Holiday Park makes perfect sense. It's close enough for quick trips into town but far enough out to feel properly Highland. The surrounding countryside opens up endless walking routes, and you're perfectly placed for day trips to Grantown-on-Spey or deeper into the Cairngorms. After a day on the hills, nothing beats returning to your own pitch rather than hunting for accommodation in town.
