Huntingdon

The Great Ouse winds through this market town like a silver thread, giving Huntingdon a slower pace that feels worlds away from London's chaos just an hour south. Oliver Cromwell was born here in 1599, and you can still sense that Puritan seriousness in the stone buildings along the high street.

The town centre is proper old England - medieval churches, Georgian terraces, and a market square that's been trading since the 12th century. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, the farmers' market brings the countryside into town. The weekly rhythm feels genuine, not put on for tourists.

Roman Lake sits just outside town, part of a cluster of former gravel workings that now draw anglers and dog walkers. The lakes stretch across the flat Cambridgeshire landscape like scattered mirrors. Hartford Lake and the numbered lakes (Lake 4, Lake 5, Lake 6, Lake 8) form a watery constellation that's brilliant for walking off Sunday lunch.

Woolpack Fisheries attracts serious carp anglers who'll sit motionless for hours. Not your scene? Eltisley Wood and Rolts Wood offer proper woodland walks where you might spot deer or hear woodpeckers hammering away.

The A14 makes getting here straightforward from Cambridge (20 minutes) or London (an hour on a good day). St Ives is a short hop east if you fancy browsing antiques or riverside pubs.

Using one of the holiday parks around town - from lakeside pitches at Crystal Lakes to the boat-friendly Huntingdon Boathaven - puts you perfectly placed for exploring the Fens. You're close enough to nip into town for supplies or a proper pub dinner, but far enough out to wake up to birdsong rather than traffic.
