Lake 4

The water here sits flat and still most days, ringed by reeds and the kind of low Cambridgeshire sky that makes you feel like you're standing at the edge of something infinite. Lake 4 is a proper working gravel pit turned nature reserve - nothing fancy, but genuinely peaceful if you catch it right.

You'll find it east of Huntingdon, though it's not the sort of place with visitor facilities or admission fees. It's more of a stop on a walk than a destination in itself. Birdwatchers come here regularly - the water attracts waders and ducks, especially in winter - and it's decent for a quick stretch of the legs if you're staying at Huntingdon Boathaven & Caravan Park just 1.5 miles away. The glamping site at The Cambridgeshire (3.6 miles off) would make a nicer overnight base if you're after something a bit more upmarket.

Allow maybe forty minutes to an hour for a walk around the perimeter. It's flat, easy going, and you won't feel rushed. The appeal is understated - this isn't dramatic countryside, it's the sort of place that grows on you. Come early morning or late afternoon when the light's better and fewer people are about.

Families with young kids might find it a touch dull unless they're genuinely keen on spotting birds. Walkers and photographers will get more from it. The real value here is as part of a wider Cambridgeshire outing rather than a standalone trip.
