Godmanchester Nature Reserve

The River Great Ouse winds through this modest patch of wetland just outside Huntingdon, and it's the sort of place that rewards a quiet morning rather than a rushed afternoon visit. Godmanchester Nature Reserve isn't going to knock your socks off with dramatic views or rare wildlife encounters, but if you're keen on spotting water birds and don't mind a bit of squelchy walking, there's something genuinely peaceful about it.

You'll find yourself on reasonably well-trodden paths with viewing points across reed beds and open water. Binoculars are essential if you're a birdwatcher - you might spot herons, various ducks, and if you're lucky, kingfishers. The reserve is modest in scale, so don't expect to spend more than an hour here unless you're seriously into ornithology. Children can find it a bit dull if they're after proper adventure, though spotting wildlife keeps some kids engaged.

Access appears to be free, though facilities are minimal - there's no visitor centre or café. Spring and early summer are best if breeding season brings more activity, though autumn migration can be rewarding too. The flat terrain means it's accessible for most fitness levels.

If you're staying at Wyton Lakes Holiday Park just up the road, or any of the caravan sites within a mile or so of Huntingdon, this makes a decent supplementary walk rather than a main event. Pair it with a walk into Huntingdon town itself for a proper half-day outing. On its own, it's a bit thin unless birdwatching is your thing.
