Lake 5

Water stretches out flat and wide near Huntingdon, and Lake 5 sits there quietly - no fanfare, no gift shop, just a proper body of water that locals know better than most visitors. It's the kind of place where you turn up expecting little and leave thinking you've stumbled onto something decent.

The lake itself is a former gravel pit, which means the banks drop away sharply in places and the water runs deep. There's a walking path that loops around most of it, taking maybe forty minutes at a gentle pace. Birdwatchers show up regularly - you'll spot cormorants, herons, the occasional kingfisher if you're lucky and quiet. The south side opens onto meadow, which means clearer views and fewer trees crowding the water.

It's free to visit and there's limited parking, so arrive early on weekends. Families with young children might manage thirty minutes before restlessness sets in - it's not a destination with attractions, just a place to walk and watch. Serious walkers and birders will spend a good couple of hours here. Bring binoculars. Bring a book. The café situation is non-existent, so pack a flask.

Staying nearby at Huntingdon Boathaven & Caravan Park puts you within a mile or so, which makes a morning walk here easy before heading elsewhere. The Cambridgeshire Glamping site is also close if you want something a touch more upmarket. Lake 5 works best as a gentle addition to a wider Cambridgeshire itinerary rather than a main event.
