Cathedral spires pierce rolling countryside where the River Wye meets ancient market traditions. This is Hereford - a proper county town that manages to feel both grand and wonderfully unpretentious.

Walk the streets and you'll find a place that takes its agricultural heritage seriously. The famous Mappa Mundi sits in the cathedral treasury, but most locals are more concerned with the weekly cattle market and whether the Wye's running high after recent rains. The cathedral itself dominates the skyline, though on market days the buzz centres around the old cattle market site.

Just outside town, the countryside opens into classic Herefordshire - all orchards and hop fields rolling towards the Welsh borders. Tupsley Park offers proper walking routes, while the River Lugg provides excellent fishing spots for those who know their way around a rod. Lugg Meadow stretches along the riverbank, lovely for summer picnics when the weather behaves.

Getting here couldn't be easier - the A49 runs straight through, and the train from Birmingham takes just over an hour. Ross-on-Wye sits 15 miles south if you fancy a proper market town comparison.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense for exploring this corner of the borderlands. You're ideally placed for day trips into the Brecon Beacons, yet close enough to nip into town for provisions or a proper pub lunch. The surrounding countryside rewards those who take time to explore - whether that's following the old Herefordshire & Gloucestershire Canal towpath at Aylestone Park or simply enjoying the view from Prospect Walk when the evening light hits the Welsh hills.
