Dunkeld

Ancient stones and towering Scots pine frame this cathedral town where the River Tay winds through Highland Perthshire's gentler edges. Dunkeld's compact streets cluster around the magnificent ruins of Dunkeld Cathedral, its Gothic arches rising above manicured lawns since the 15th century. The town proper takes about twenty minutes to walk end to end, but that's rather the point.

Beyond the cathedral walls, proper Highland drama unfolds. The Falls of the Braan thunder through a dramatic gorge just west of town - Ossian's Cave and the folly bridge make for cracking Instagram shots, though the path can get slippery when wet. For something completely different, the Eagle Totem Pole at the Ell Shop gallery showcases contemporary Scottish art in a converted weaving mill.

Walking enthusiasts will find plenty of Munro-bagging opportunities on the doorstep. Craig Obney and Creag Liath offer decent day hikes with views across the Tay Valley, while the archaeological sites at West Balnald and Kindallachan hint at this area's ancient significance - though you'll need local knowledge to find the less obvious stone circles.

Getting here couldn't be simpler. The A9 runs right past Dunkeld, making it an easy drive from Edinburgh or Perth. The train station sits just across the river in Birnam, with regular services from Glasgow and the capital.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Inver Mill Farm or Erigmore makes perfect sense. You're close enough to nip into town for provisions or a proper pub lunch, but far enough out to enjoy the silence that only Highland Perthshire can deliver. The surrounding countryside feels genuinely wild - red deer, golden eagles, and if you're very lucky, the odd pine marten.
