On a clear day you can see for miles; on a grey one, the cloud sits thick and mysterious round the summit. It's a solid hill rather than a spectacular one. The peak itself is unremarkable - no cairn, no shelter, just windswept grass and the satisfaction of having climbed something real. Walkers will find it straightforward enough, though it's steep enough in places to warm you up. Families with youngsters might struggle on a wet day when the path gets slippery. The big draw here is proximity. You're not hiking into genuine wilderness - Dunkeld is proper civilization, just down the glen. That makes Craig Tombane perfect if you want a proper walk without straying far from camp or a pub. Spring and autumn are best, when the midges aren't out to get you and the light's golden.
