Craig Obney

The walk up Craig Obney from Dunkeld is one of those climbs that sneaks up on you - not particularly high, but steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs. This Perthshire peak rises above the River Tay valley with views that properly justify the effort. On a clear day you're looking across towards Ben Vrackie and the wider Tay landscape, which is exactly the sort of vista that makes the Scottish Highlands feel accessible without needing full mountaineering kit.

The ascent takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour depending on fitness, following woodland paths that open out as you gain height. It's a family-friendly walk if your kids are reasonably confident on their feet - nothing technical, just a bit of gradient. Walkers after a proper morning's activity without committing to a full day's hiking will find this hits the sweet spot. There's something appealing about a peak that doesn't require hours of slog.

Staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Erigmore or Inver Mill Farm are both within easy reach and well-rated - makes this an obvious choice for a morning sortie. Dunkeld itself is worth exploring afterwards, with the cathedral ruins and riverside walks adding another layer to a day out. The whole thing feels properly connected to the landscape rather than tacked on as a box-ticking exercise. Bring decent boots rather than trainers; the path can be muddy even days after rain.
