Former steel town turned green gateway to the Pennines, Consett sits pretty on elevated ground with proper countryside stretching in all directions. The town reinvented itself after the steelworks closed in 1980, transforming from industrial powerhouse to outdoor playground. What strikes you first is how the landscape opens up - rolling hills, ancient woodlands, and that sense of space you get when you're properly up north.

The Glass & Art Gallery showcases local talent and the town's artistic revival. More compelling though is the area's Roman heritage at Vindomora, where you can explore genuine archaeological remains. Hill Bank Wood offers decent walking, while Shotley Bridge Picnic Area makes a lovely spot for lunch with views across the Derwent Valley.

Consett works brilliantly as a base for exploring County Durham's wilder side. The town's elevated position means you're minutes from proper fell walking country, yet close enough to Newcastle (15 miles) and Durham city for day trips. The A68 runs right past, making it dead easy to reach from most directions.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks puts you right in the sweet spot. You've got immediate access to the Pennine foothills for hiking, cycling routes that actually challenge you, and enough space to properly unwind. The local golf course at Consett & District offers decent greens if that's your thing, while the various picnic areas scattered about make perfect spots for lazy afternoons when the weather's being kind.
