The River Derwent has a quirky claim to fame just outside Consett: a fish pass that lets salmon and sea trout bypass Shotley Mill Dam on their way upstream. It's not glamorous, but it's genuinely interesting if you care about how rivers actually work and what goes into keeping fish populations alive in industrial areas.

You're looking at a modern structure built into the riverbank - essentially a series of pools that gradually step the fish up and over the dam. The engineering is solid, and there's something oddly satisfying about understanding the mechanics of it. It's the sort of thing that appeals to keen naturalists, children studying river systems, or anyone doing a serious walk along the Derwent Valley.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though facilities are minimal - this isn't a visitor centre with a café. You can see the pass from the riverside path, and it makes sense to combine it with a longer walk. The Derwent Valley Walk passes through here, so it slots naturally into a half-day ramble rather than a standalone trip.

Families camping at Hidden Retreat Glamping just up the road could easily fit this into a riverside afternoon. Same goes for anyone based at Allensford or any of the other parks dotted around Consett. It's not worth driving miles to see on its own merits, but if you're already in the area and interested in river conservation or industrial heritage, it's worth a detour. Allow twenty minutes maximum.
