Consett Park

The former steelworks site at Consett has been transformed into something genuinely surprising - a proper nature reserve where industry once dominated the landscape. Walking through here, you're surrounded by woodland, grassland, and wetland habitats that have sprung up across the old iron and steel plant. The reserve works best for walkers and nature enthusiasts rather than families looking for attractions in the traditional sense. There's no café, no visitor centre, no facilities to speak of. You come here for the birds, the flora, the peace - and to wrap your head around how dramatically a place can reinvent itself. The industrial heritage is still visible if you know what you're looking for, ruins and remnants poking through the vegetation, which adds a strange layer to the experience.

You can easily spend two to three hours exploring without rushing. Spring and autumn are probably your best bets for wildlife spotting. Free entry, naturally, and it's just outside Consett itself, making it a solid option if you're based at Hidden Retreat Glamping or Allensford Holiday Park nearby. It won't be the highlight of your park holiday, but it's a worthwhile morning walk that tells you something interesting about how the North East has moved beyond its industrial past.
