Sisterson Waterfall

The walk down to Sisterson Waterfall is what makes it worthwhile - a proper little hike through woodland that feels like you're escaping the world, even though Consett is barely a few miles away. The waterfall itself is modest rather than dramatic, but after heavy rain it does throw a decent amount of water and there's something satisfying about reaching it. You're looking at a short scramble down to the base, muddy underfoot, and the whole outing takes maybe 45 minutes to an hour depending on how long you linger.

This is the kind of spot that works brilliantly if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Hidden Retreat Glamping or Allensford are closest - and fancy a morning walk without driving anywhere significant. Families with primary school-aged kids will enjoy it; the path isn't technical but it does require a bit of scrambling, so younger children might need a hand. Dog walkers absolutely love it.

There's no car park right at the trailhead and no facilities that I could find, so come prepared. Best visited in winter or spring when there's water flow - summer can be underwhelming if the stream is low. The surrounding woodland makes it pleasant year-round, though it gets boggy, so decent boots are essential. It's free to visit and fits neatly into a park-based holiday in the area, though realistically it's a one-off diversion rather than worth planning a trip around. If you're already in County Durham for a week's caravan holiday, absolutely squeeze it in.
