Foxley Wood, one of Norfolk's finest ancient woodlands, spreads across 375 acres just to the west. Spring brings carpets of bluebells, while autumn turns the canopy into a brilliant gold and copper display. It's a cracking spot for a proper ramble, with well-marked trails threading between oak and ash trees that have stood for centuries.

Sparham Pools Nature Reserve offers a completely different landscape - old gravel workings transformed into a haven for water birds. Kingfishers dart between the reeds, and you might catch sight of a barn owl hunting over the surrounding grassland as evening draws in.

The surrounding villages each tell their story through hand-carved wooden signs - North Elmham, Bintree, and Lyng among them. These aren't tourist attractions exactly, but they're lovely examples of local craftsmanship and community pride. Worth pausing for a photo if you're cycling the quiet lanes.

Dereham, the nearest proper town, lies eight miles southeast with shops and services. The old railway line to Thuxton makes for pleasant walking, though the station itself closed decades ago.

Staying at one of the local glamping sites or caravan parks puts you right in the heart of this peaceful farming landscape. No crowds, no queues - just Norfolk countryside at its most unspoiled. Perfect if you want to properly disconnect from the world for a few days.
