Whitwell Common, Open Access Land

The open heathland here sprawls across Norfolk countryside with a quiet that feels genuinely rare these days. Whitwell Common is working land - managed for wildlife rather than manicured for visitors - so don't expect obvious attractions or welcoming signage. What you get instead is proper walking terrain through lowland heath, the sort of place where you might spot nightjars at dusk if you're lucky, or at least hear them churring away.

It's best suited to walkers comfortable with unmarked paths and a bit of scrubby terrain underfoot. History buffs will appreciate knowing this landscape has been grazed and managed for centuries. The common sits just east of Bylaugh, making it a genuine detour rather than a main-event destination, but that's precisely what gives it character. You won't be fighting crowds here.

The nearest caravan base is Bylaugh Country Park, just 3.5 miles west - a solid five-star spot to base yourself for a few nights exploring the quieter bits of Norfolk. From there, Whitwell Common works as a morning walk or evening circuit depending on light. Allow two to three hours if you're in no rush; bring proper boots as the ground can be boggy in winter.

Free access, no facilities, no visitor centre. This is one for people who find manicured nature reserves a bit dull and don't need a café at the end of every walk. Early morning or dusk visits reward patience - that's when the common actually comes alive.
