Flat fenland stretches endlessly from this historic market town, where medieval merchants once traded wool across Europe. Boston sits where the River Witham meets The Wash, its famous 'Stump' - St Botolph's Church - visible for miles across the Lincolnshire countryside.

The town feels properly lived-in rather than touristy. Market days bring farmers from surrounding villages, while the high street maintains that authentic small-town rhythm. Boston Bowl offers family entertainment when the weather turns, though most visitors come for the countryside connections.

Sibsey Trader Mill makes for a lovely afternoon - one of the few working windmills left in Lincolnshire. The surrounding fens are criss-crossed with drainage channels and medieval drove roads that once carried cattle to market. It's proper big sky country out here.

Ruins of Bolingbroke Castle lie a short drive southeast - birthplace of Henry IV and worth the detour for history buffs. The castle grounds give cracking views across the Wolds, while St Helen's Church nearby contains some fine medieval stonework.

Getting here takes patience from London - reckon on three hours via the A1. Sleaford is the nearest proper town with decent shops, though Boston has everything you need for a few days exploring.

Camping nearby makes perfect sense for walkers tackling the Lincolnshire Wolds or families wanting seaside access. Skegness lies just 20 miles east, while the fenland footpaths offer surprisingly good hiking through this ancient landscape. Several sites around Tattershall and Woodhall Spa put you within easy reach of both coast and countryside.
