Horncastle Hill

Lincolnshire doesn't exactly scream mountains, so Horncastle Hill comes as a bit of a surprise. It's the highest point in the county at 423 feet - which tells you everything you need to know about the landscape here: dead flat everywhere else. The hill itself is a modest affair, crowned with trees and offering views across the Fens that stretch for miles. On a clear day you can see right across to the distant horizon, which is the whole appeal.

This is walkers' territory, not thrill-seekers. The climb takes maybe twenty minutes from the base, and it's a proper scramble up steep sides rather than a manicured path. Kids will either love the muddy trudge or complain endlessly - depends on the child. History types might appreciate that it was likely an Iron Age fort, though there's precious little evidence of it now. The real draw is simply having the highest viewpoint for miles and feeling like you've actually climbed something in Lincolnshire.

Best visited on a dry day when the ground's firm underfoot. Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though there's no visitor infrastructure - bring a picnic if you're planning to linger. Boston's only three miles away, so it's an easy slot into a wider exploration of the area. Pair it with any of the nearby parks like New Farm Holidays or Bain View Glamping for a proper Lincolnshire break, though honestly it's more a quick diversion than a destination in itself.
