Film studios might have put this Hertfordshire town on the map, but there's more to Borehamwood than meets the eye. The BBC Elstree Studios have churned out everything from EastEnders to Strictly Come Dancing for decades, giving the place a proper showbiz edge that's quite unexpected for somewhere so close to the M25.

Getting here couldn't be easier. The train from London takes about 20 minutes, making it a doddle for a day out or weekend break. You're bang in the middle of some lovely countryside too - Caldecote Hill offers cracking views across the Hertfordshire landscape, whilst Aldenham Country Park provides proper green space for walking and cycling.

Culture vultures will find the Bentley Priory Museum well worth the short trip. This Georgian mansion tells the fascinating story of RAF Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain. For something completely different, hunt out 'favourite spot' - Lord Byron, a rather quirky historic site that marks where the famous poet once lingered.

The surrounding area has that classic Home Counties feel - all rolling hills and ancient woodland. Radlett station puts you within easy reach of St Albans, whilst Harrow & Wealdstone opens up London's northwest. It's brilliant commuter belt territory, but weekends see the pace slow right down.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense if you're exploring this corner of Hertfordshire. You get the best of both worlds - countryside calm with London accessibility. Plus, you're ideally placed for day trips to Windsor, St Albans Cathedral, or even a cheeky afternoon at the Harry Potter studios just up the road.
