Harrow on the Hill Town Memorial

The memorial sits on Harrow on the Hill itself, a striking chalk ridge that rises abruptly from the Hertfordshire plains east of Borehamwood. It's a proper old monument - the kind locals know about but most visitors driving past on the main road completely miss. The hill itself is the real draw here: steep enough to make you work for the view, but short enough that you won't regret the climb. From the top, on a clear day, you can see across towards London itself, which explains why this spot has mattered for centuries.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from this - it marks significant local events and the memorial's inscriptions tell you something about what people valued enough to commemorate. It's not a destination attraction where you'd spend an afternoon, but if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Aldenham Country Park or Home Farm Glamping, it makes an excellent morning walk. The hill itself is free to roam and the walk takes perhaps 20 minutes up, assuming you're reasonably fit.

Go early or late in the day if you can - the light's better and you'll avoid any crowds on weekends. Kids aged eight and up will probably enjoy the climb and the achievement of reaching the top, though under that age it's fairly steep.
