The M40 junction signs don't do justice to what lies beneath - this market town sits on proper Roman foundations, with the remains of a Roman villa still visible for those who know where to look. Bicester's transformation from sleepy Oxfordshire backwater to outlet shopping destination has been dramatic, but step away from the retail parks and you'll find a town that's kept its character intact.

Saint Giles church anchors the old town centre, its Norman tower a reminder that people have been settling here for centuries. The countryside rolls away in all directions - proper English farmland dotted with ancient woodlands like Timberyard Clump and Weston Wood. These aren't massive forests, but they're perfect for afternoon walks when you need to escape the car parks.

Trow Pool offers decent fishing if that's your thing. More impressive is Middleton Stoney Castle, a short drive north - though it's private, the surrounding countryside is lovely for exploring. The whole area feels quietly prosperous, with villages that haven't been completely consumed by commuter belt sprawl.

Getting here couldn't be easier - junction 9 off the M40 puts you right in the thick of it, while Bicester North station connects directly to London Marylebone. Oxford's just down the road if you fancy a proper day out among the dreaming spires.

Staying at one of the holiday parks scattered around makes perfect sense. You're close enough to dive into the outlet shopping madness but far enough out to enjoy the Oxfordshire countryside properly. Plus, you can actually park without paying through the nose - something of a luxury these days.
