Banbury

Cross-shaped streets radiate from a market square that's been trading since medieval times. Banbury sits at the crossroads of Oxfordshire, a proper market town where the famous nursery rhyme's cross still draws visitors to Horsefair, though today's version is Victorian rather than the original that Roundheads demolished in 1602.

The town feels lived-in rather than touristy. Thursday market days bring energy to the centre, but midweek it's pleasantly quiet for wandering the mix of independent shops and familiar chains. Beyond the town centre, the countryside opens up quickly - you're among rolling fields and ancient villages within minutes.

History buffs will find plenty to explore. Rainsborough Camp offers earthworks from an Iron Age hillfort, while the WW2 Pill Box reminds you of more recent conflicts. North Aston Hall provides a glimpse of grander times, though it's the smaller churches like Saints Peter and Paul that really capture the area's long story.

For a breather from town life, Wilson's Gorse offers woodland walks, and Adderbury Lakes provides a peaceful nature reserve just outside Banbury proper. The surrounding villages are worth exploring too - Deddington with its library housed in a Georgian building typifies the area's blend of practicality and heritage.

Banbury makes an excellent base for exploring north Oxfordshire and the Cotswolds beyond. The M40 runs nearby, making it easily accessible from London or Birmingham. Staying at one of the touring parks or campsites scattered around the town puts you within easy reach of both Banbury's amenities and the countryside walks that start practically on your doorstep.
