About Banff

Wild North Sea winds shape this rugged fishing town where red sandstone buildings face down centuries of coastal storms. Banff sits at the mouth of the River Deveron, its Georgian terraces and medieval streets telling stories of salmon fishing, smuggling, and maritime adventure along Aberdeenshire's dramatic coastline.

The town centre feels properly Scottish - none of your sanitised tourist traps here. Local shops line the high street, while the harbour area retains its working character despite the decline of the fishing fleet. Duff House, just across the river bridge in neighbouring Macduff, houses one of Scotland's finest art collections in William Adam's baroque mansion.

Coastal walks are the real draw. The cliffs eastward towards Gardenstown offer some of Scotland's most spectacular sea views, with gannets wheeling overhead and waves crashing far below. Westward, the beach at Whitehills provides gentler walking, particularly lovely at sunset when the light catches the Moray Firth.

History buffs shouldn't miss the Longmanhill WW2 War Memorial, a sobering reminder of the area's wartime role. The surrounding countryside rolls inland through farming country towards the Grampians, dotted with stone circles and ancient settlements.

Getting here takes commitment - it's a good hour's drive from Aberdeen via the A947 and A98. But that remoteness is half the appeal. Staying at one of the local caravan parks makes perfect sense for exploring this stretch of coast properly. Banff Links Caravan Park puts you right by the sea, while Whitehills Caravan Park offers easy access to quieter beaches. Both serve as excellent bases for day trips along the Moray Coast Trail or inland to the whisky country around Dufftown.
