Macduff

The salt wind carries whispers of fishing boats that once crowded this harbour town's waters. Macduff perches on Aberdeenshire's rugged coast, where the Deveron meets the Moray Firth - a proper working town that hasn't lost its maritime soul despite quieter harbours these days.

Macduff Marine Aquarium stands as the star attraction, housing Scotland's largest collection of native marine life. Worth every penny of admission. The Royal Tarlair Golf Club offers cracking clifftop holes, though the abandoned Tarlair Outdoor Swimming Pool nearby tells a different story - art deco grandeur slowly surrendering to the elements.

Across the harbour, Banff's Georgian elegance provides striking contrast. Duff House, William Adam's baroque mansion, houses an impressive art collection and makes for a fascinating afternoon. The Temple of Venus folly crowns the hill behind it.

Coastal walks reveal dramatic scenery. West towards Whitehills, the cliffs are particularly spectacular on clear days. East, Gamrie Bay's sheltered cove offers respite from Atlantic winds. The town itself centres around a compact harbour area - Macduff Arts Centre hosts regular exhibitions, while the distillery offers proper Highland single malt tastings.

Getting here means the A98 coastal route from Aberdeen (45 minutes) or Inverness (90 minutes). Banff station closed decades ago, so you'll need wheels. Several holiday parks dot the surrounding countryside - Myrus Holiday Park sits right in Macduff itself, while Banff Links Caravan Park offers sea views just across the harbour. Both provide excellent bases for exploring this stretch of coast without the tourist crowds further south.
