Ballachulish

Two bridges span the waters here, connecting North and South Ballachulish across Loch Leven's narrowest point. This Highland village sits at one of Scotland's most dramatic crossroads, where the road to Skye meets the route through Glen Coe.

The landscape is properly spectacular. Glen Coe opens up to the east - that famous valley of towering peaks and dark corries that's appeared in countless films. From the Loch Leven View Point, you can take in the full sweep of the loch stretching towards Fort William, while Glencoe Lochan offers a gentler walk through Caledonian pines to a mirror-still lochan.

History runs deep in these parts. The Clach Eanruig sits quietly by the roadside - this ancient standing stone has watched travellers pass for millennia. More recent but equally poignant is the Roderick Maclean Memorial, marking a fascinating footnote in Victorian history.

Walking options are endless. The peaks of Màm na Gualainn and Meall nan Cleireach rise steeply from the village, offering proper Highland scrambles for the adventurous. Less demanding is the Glencoe Lochan Trail, a lovely forest walk that's well worth the short drive.

Getting here couldn't be easier - the A82 brings you straight from Glasgow via Loch Lomond, or from Fort William in twenty minutes. It's that accessibility that makes Ballachulish brilliant as a base. You're perfectly positioned for day trips to Skye, Mull, or deeper into the Highlands, yet never more than a few miles from proper wilderness.

Staying at one of the nearby parks puts you right in the thick of it. Invercoe Caravan & Motorhome Park and Glen Nevis Caravan & Camping Park are both within easy reach, giving you that essential early morning start for the hills or late evening return after island hopping.
