Ayr

Scotland's longest stretch of sandy coastline meets rolling farmland just south of here, creating one of the country's most accessible seaside escapes. Ayr sits at the heart of Burns Country, where Robert Burns was born and spent his formative years, though the town has plenty going for it beyond its literary connections.

The wide sandy beach stretches for miles in both directions. It's proper family territory - safe swimming, donkey rides in summer, and enough space that you'll find a quiet spot even on busy weekends. The seafront's well-maintained promenade links to the harbour area, where fishing boats still land their catch alongside the pleasure craft.

Beyond the coast, this corner of South Ayrshire rewards exploration. Electric Brae, just south of town, creates a famous optical illusion where cars appear to roll uphill. It's a bit touristy but undeniably fun. Maybole, ten minutes inland, centres on a medieval high street dominated by the old castle ruins, while the surrounding countryside hides archaeological treasures like Lochspouts Crannog on its ancient loch.

Getting here couldn't be easier - Ayr sits on the main Glasgow to Stranraer railway line, with regular services from Glasgow Central taking just under an hour. The A77 provides equally straightforward road access from the central belt.

Staying at one of the nearby parks puts you within easy reach of both the beach and Burns Country attractions. The coastline here faces west across the Firth of Clyde, making for spectacular sunsets, while the gentle Ayrshire hills provide shelter from the worst of Scotland's weather.
