Brown Carrick Hill

You'll spot Brown Carrick Hill long before you reach it - a distinctive rounded bump rising above the farmland just south of Ayr. It's not a massive undertaking, which makes it rather brilliant for a half-day outing if you're staying at Craig Tara or exploring the Ayrshire coast.

The walk up takes maybe forty minutes from the car park, depending on fitness and how many stops you make for the views. The path winds through moorland and rough grass, nothing technical but a fair bit of climbing. At the top - 300 metres or so - you get proper panoramic stuff: the Firth of Clyde stretches out, and on a clear day you'll spot Goat Fell away across the water. Inland, it's all rolling Lowland countryside.

Walkers will find this worthwhile. The summit itself is tidy and there's a cairn to sit by. Young children might find it a slog if they're not keen on hills, but older kids capable of a decent hike will manage fine. It's free, obviously - just park sensibly and head off.

What makes it work for a holiday park stay is the brevity. You're not committing your whole afternoon. Combine it with a wander around Ayr seafront or a quick visit to Culzean Castle nearby, and you've got yourself a proper day. Brown Carrick Hill punches above its weight for accessibility and views. Worth the trip if you're in the area.
