YWT Flamborough Cliffs

The cliffs at Flamborough rise up like a proper wall of chalk, dropping sheer to the North Sea below. This is Yorkshire Wildlife Trust land, and it's one of the few places on the east coast where you can actually get a sense of what the geology is doing - those white bands aren't just decoration, they're telling the story of millions of years of marine deposits. The whole headland is a nesting site for seabirds, which means spring and early summer get properly lively with guillemots, razorbills and kittiwakes wheeling overhead. You'll see them clustered on the ledges, and if the light's right and you've brought binoculars, it's genuinely gripping stuff.

Walkers will find the clifftop path along here well-trodden and straightforward, though windy days can be bracing. Allow a couple of hours if you're actually stopping to watch the birds rather than just stomping through. The views sweep along the coast toward Scarborough way, and back toward Bridlington. It's free to access, which is refreshing.

Families with young kids might find the actual birdwatching bit tedious after twenty minutes, but the walk itself and the sheer drama of the drop usually hold them. Serious birders will want to come in May or June when the nesting colonies are at full noise.
