Yr Aryg

The walk up Yr Aryg from Llanfairfechan is one of those routes that rewards you properly without demanding a full day's commitment. You're looking at maybe two hours up and back, following a clear path that starts near the village and climbs steadily through moorland until you hit the 750-metre summit. The views back towards the coast and across to Snowdonia are genuinely excellent - on a clear day you can see right across the Conwy Valley. It's not a technical scramble or anything; steady legs and decent boots will do it.

Walkers will find this genuinely worthwhile, and families with older kids can manage it without too much fuss. Younger children might flag a bit on the climb, but it's short enough that most will push through. The terrain is a touch boggy after rain, so pick your timing if you can. The path itself is well-trodden and obvious, no navigation nightmare.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Ogwen Bank is closest at 3.6 miles away - this works as a perfect half-day excursion. Combine it with a wander around Llanfairfechan village itself, which has a decent seafront and some nice spots for a post-walk pint. It's a proper local hill rather than a showstopper, but that's rather the point. No queues, no visitor centre faffing, just a decent walk and honest views. Worth the detour if you're in North Wales for a few days.
