Garreg Fawr

Rocky outcrops and sweeping views across the Menai Strait make this modest summit proper rewarding for the effort involved. Garreg Fawr rises just outside Llanfairfechan, offering walkers a decent workout without the crowds you'll find on Snowdonia's more famous peaks. The climb takes about an hour each way, following well-worn paths through bracken and heather before opening onto the rocky top.

Families with older children will manage this one fine, though toddlers might struggle with the steeper sections near the summit. The payoff comes in the form of cracking views south towards Snowdonia and north across Anglesey - on clear days you can pick out Puffin Island and the Great Orme at Llandudno.

Come early morning or late afternoon for the best light, and pack layers as it gets properly blustery up top even on calm days below. The route starts from several points around Llanfairfechan, with parking available in the town centre.

For those staying at nearby parks like Three Streams Glamping or Craiglwyd Hall Caravan Park, this makes a lovely half-day adventure. It's close enough to your base that you can be back for afternoon tea, but wild enough to feel like a proper Welsh mountain experience.
