Yr Arddu

Yr Arddu is a proper little peak that punches above its weight - nothing massive, but the walk up from Caernarfon way rewards you with views across the Menai Strait that'll make you forget you're not on some alpine adventure. The summit sits at 430 metres, which means it's steep enough to feel like actual climbing without needing ropes or rope experience.

You're looking at a straightforward fell walk rather than a technical scramble. The path winds up through moorland, and on a clear day you can see right across to Anglesey. On a murky one - which is half the time up here - you'll be hiking through cloud, which has its own drama. Allow a couple of hours return if you're at a reasonable pace, bit longer if the weather's turned.

Walkers will get the most from this. Kids might find it a slog if they're not used to inclines, though determined ones will manage it fine. History types won't find much up there, but the views over Caernarfon itself - the castle, the town - make it worth doing just for the perspective.

If you're after something more comfortable, Llechwedd Glamping at Plas Weunydd, while a touch further out, gives you a proper base for tackling Yr Arddu and exploring the wider Snowdonia fringe. It's free to climb, naturally. Go early if the forecast is decent - clouds roll in fast.
