Snowdon Summit Station

The view from 3,560 feet is something else entirely. Snowdon Summit Station sits at the top of Wales's highest peak, and on a clear day you can see all the way to Anglesey, the Irish Sea, and across into the Lake District. Most people arrive via the mountain railway - a cog-driven train that winds up through forests and moorland for nearly five miles - though walkers tackle the various routes year-round, some taking just a few hours, others much longer depending on which trail you choose.

There's a café up there now, which divides opinion. Nice to grab a coffee without carrying a flask all the way up, but it does feel a bit odd eating a sandwich while queuing for the loo in such a wild place. The station itself is purely functional - you're really here for the mountains rolling away in every direction, the sense of being properly high up.

Walkers get the most from Snowdon. You need decent boots and reasonably clear weather - mist rolls in fast. If you're not up for climbing, the train journey itself takes about an hour each way and costs roughly £35 return for adults. Allow three to four hours total if you're taking the train and spending time at the summit.

Base yourself at one of the campsites clustered nearby - Llanberis Touring Park and Beddgelert Campsite are both within easy striking distance - and you've got proper mountain walking on your doorstep. It's not a quick stop; this is a day's commitment. Worth every minute if the weather cooperates.
